TOW #10

Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, a new upcoming terrorist group that has caused vigorous damage to the United States as of late, has Caused thousands of deaths amongst American and British journalist, and most recently the six different attacks in Paris which killed two hundred people. In the eyes of the frightened Americans we are worried that the desire of ISIS to become a world power and begin to enter the United States may come true. In this illustration it has many factors, the hands with tools in them, representing his picture is using the rhetorical device pathos in order to establish fear to the citizens of the United States. The puzzled and confused look in President Obama's eye is to show the concern and nervousness he has to mess with ISIS which can explode at any time. Barack Obama being the highest power and representative of the United States needs to be the highest and most knowledgeable person when it comes to foreign affairs. The mood now turns to the audience as fear rolls through our bodies and need to have all faith in our president. But as depicted in the picture the purpose is coherent, can we trust president Obama to silence the bomb?

The historically known jazz styled music has been addressed before but not like this. In the essay Bop written by Langston Hughes he identifies the colored culture and what they brought to society in the social and political standpoints. He addresses the unfair disadvantages that colored people get vs the white people. Using the Be-Bop music they made relevant as a source of credit as the white and blacks had equal opportunities and was a progressive novelist.

For this marking period I have began to read The Great Gatsby. Although the novel is very popular I have never reached out and read it. So far, it is about a boy named Nick Carraway who lived next door to Gatsby. In the beginning I can start to notice the development of Jay Gatsby through his times of a poor man going through his life searching for his first love. already filled with diverse diction and the new innovative style of how to chase the American dream.

From this website they digress on the issue presented at the republican debate this past month. The issue primarily realizes on the horrible performance by CNBC, providing inadequate and unresponsive questions. The website is a satirical essay that rants on about the horrible job that CNBC did, comparing it to how the New York Mets did in world series game 2 versus the royals. The website uses satire to continue publicize the issue of how poorly the debate was held by CNBC. This overall did not affect the voting but the candidates most likely were not credible with the outline that was created by the CNBC. The debate was looked as a form of comedy due to the irrelevant making the candidates uncomfortable and basically ruined the ideas and reforms of the republican debate.

#7 Robert Frost: The Figure a Poem Makes

The artist and deliberate poet Robert Frost, a hard-knocks poet with ambition to change the style of poetry. In the essay The Figure a Poem Makes, the furious invective tone and the straightforward satiric style of Robert Frost illustrates the main purpose to identify the flaws in modern poetry today. Mr. Frost addresses his audience as the modern poets calling them "Sprung-rhythmists" and how they are not emotional enough towards their own writing, "No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader." Robert Frost digresses among the main differences in poetry when he was the modern and new artist versus the time period where he had to watch and observe the new trends in poetry take over the complex and emotional original style of poetry. The appeal is very credible to the reader for the main reason that Mr. Frost was a very high-end poet himself, but at the same time he is very specific with the changes and the crucial patterns that left the hearts of the modern poetry that should have always been apart of the art. The wisdom of Robert Frost to analyze the poetry as well beginning to realize as the years go on that he is soon going to give his role in poetry to a new artist one day is easier to explain in the words of the man himself, "It begins in delight and ends in wisdom.. in a clarification of life not necessarily a great clarification such as sects and cults are founded on. But in a momentary stay against confusion." The man with plenty to say has deliberated his ferocious side and exemplified his true feelings towards the new style of poetry but has also shown maturity in the fact that he has grown to analyze and guide the new and incorporate the old.

TOW#6 Triump?

Donald Trump running for election to begin with sounds silly and unnecessary. This illustration just gives a simple example of why Donald trump should not be in the office. The rhetorical device used here is irony because Donald trump is using the idea of how can President Barack Obama be our president if he isn't even from USA? But at the same time Donald Trump doesn't have the slightest bit of normal in him. This cartoon illustrates the true emotions of the people of the United states possibly having a wealthy, egotistical, nut-job as a president of a strong and imperial nation. I believe the creator of this illustration has displayed that Donald Trump may think his triumph to become president is valid but, as of right now things aren't looking to hot.

F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Crack up describes the morals that come with life and the decisions we make will always come back around to haunt us at some point. Fitzgerald uses the rhetorical device homily to tell what she believes are the true cracks in the world. Her opinions were proven to be logical but at the same time through Fitzgerald's experience as a child she was able to see the world as a opportunist and use the cracks to leap ahead and solve the issues that came her way. It was used on page 142 that life can perceived from the eye of the beholder and this method was not built from her ideas she developed this after viewing her favorite films and celebrities and just observed her specific environment. This is effective because she really wants he audience to think outside of the box and push ourselves to understand the true anomaly that comes with everyday life.

Tow #4 Letter From Birmingham Jail

It's April 16th, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. Is in Birmingham City Jail. In this letter Dr. King wrote to the African Americans to tell them that change will happen. "Seldom, if ever, do I pause to answer criticism of my work and ideas. If I sought to answer all of the criticisms that cross my desk, my secretaries would be engaged in little else in the course of the day."  Martin Luther King Jr, a man of his word and compromise devoted his time to the people, saying that he will get out soon and when he does there will be change. This Essay for my forth TOW uses the rhetorical device Homily to speak of what is going on in the black community, declaring there needs to be a change in society. I believe this is effective because he is also going through the segregation process as well, which makes him more credible in the sense that the audience can relate and really believe that this has to stop. Letter from Birmingham Jail is not a plead for help, it is a cry for freedom and belief that if the black community unifies then and only then the entire community will change for the better.

TOW #3

In this illustration there are many components, the hands reaching out emphatically to force President Obama to make rash decisions towards handling ISIS. The crowd yelling in exclamation to "do something" is emphasizing the idea that the people are looking to Obama to fix and get rid of ISIS, but as depicted in the picture it is trying to illustrate that Barack Obama isn't able to fix the reoccurring issue. He looks confused and nervous with the wires that resemble the ticking time bomb that is ISIS. Coming close to the visit of the Pope I felt that this prevalent issue should be overlooked just through this political cartoon. I believe this is logos because its reasoning of what we are expecting along with the reality.

For my second TOW, I did the sports illustrated article, Friday Night lights 25th anniversary. The follow up of this famous book and movie. The article talks about the brotherhood and the real insight of the experiences each player had. To me this article really proved that this story will always be remembered, I say this because after 25 years people across the world are commemorating the climb of a rural city football team playing in front of thousands of people. The article although may seem limited on information the men from this team spoke to sports illustrated, "I want to resurrect those memories, since I am now 60, when you forget far more than you remember. I hate going back in my life, and I am not a believer in nostalgia. But on the eve of the 25th anniversary of the publication of Friday Night Lights, I feel compelled to return. It was a linchpin moment of my life. The moment, to be honest." This article in my opinion makes the movie and book plausible, because you see the true reactions and feelings behind the players, and now after reading this article I was able to make all connections to the movie and book.

TOW #1

My First T.O.W is on a sports novel named "Friday Night Lights" The first half of this novel speaks in the likes of each individual football player. Every player has their sanctuary and for these Odessa Panthers, that field was where they strived the most. The book goes on to tell the story in the perspective of the personal lives of the high school athletes. Off the field these young men have had abusive parents, dying relatives, and even marital issues. The book is describing the ride that this football team had every Friday night and on these Friday nights the experience and emotions they felt that this field gave them. The field was symbolic, the field was a symbol of excellence and no matter where you came from or what you are going through you put it aside to give all efforts to this field and never give up. The author has used the rhetorical device, symbolism to tell the amazing story of a fighting football team. The author was able to connect to the audience and create real life passion and morals. The author makes this novel surreal with the setting and the realistic behaviors that come along with it. In 1998 the young men whom descended from Texas they were tough, they didn’t follow social norms they had strong accents and most importantly the desire to play football. The authors purpose is to inspire the audience with an unforgettable come-back story that took the world by storm. Friday Night Lights was written to tell the tale of young men experiencing everyday life lessons just by playing the game of football. To struggle, to live and to prosper is what the author wants the audience to take away from this novel, to be able to learn that whatever we do, do it to the best you can; cause if you don’t you will gain nothing.

IRB intro #1

For my first IRB book for this course I will be reading the novel "Friday Night Lights" this novel is based on a true story about a football team that displays perseverance, dedication, and most importantly principles.

Pamplona in July

                                                            Pamplona in July

Ernest Hemingway’s purpose was to convey the excitement he felt when he visited Pamplona and witnessed the running with the bulls and bull fighting rituals using a descriptive narrative. He uses vivid adjectives to make the audience imagine they are actually there experiencing this deep-seeded tradition. The often-mentioned colors, red and yellow are also used to illustrate the scenery that Ernest Hemingway experienced that July. What Mr. Hemingway experienced, in fact was the San Fermin fiesta and it brought so much joy to him that it led him to write his first successful novel “The Sun Also Rises” for which he later won a noble prize for literature. Ernest Hemingway would continue to return and rejoice at the fiesta to take the pain away from his life.
What made his writing so unique are the flow and the simplistic organization that made the descriptions coherent and deliberate. He wrote in a style similar to a song “Really beautiful girls, gorgeous, bright shawls over their shoulders, dark, dark-eyed, black-lace mantillas over their hair, walk with their escorts in crowds that pass from morning until night along the narrow walk that runs between inner and outer belts of cafe tables under the shade of the arcade out of the white glare of the Plaza de la Constitucion.”

Ernest Hemingway used repetition to really emphasize his surroundings and reach out to the audience what his emotions were as he was at the fiesta, he mentioned a lot about the exhilaration behind the bull fighting and the bull run. The colors were a huge part in this essay, because when his purpose is to illustrate to us the best times of his life, he wants the audience to be able to picture his experiences. This well-known author was an inspiration to enjoy life and aspire to do great things, which made this essay one of the more enjoyable ones because he was able to really connect to his audience without even directly talking to us. Ernest Hemingway made the Fiesta of San Fermin a place and time never to be forgotten.

Corn-Pone Opinions

                                                              Corn-Pone Opinions

Mark Twain, a complex and poetic writer, describes the hardships and strict opinions he had during his youth. He begins his essay speaking of the young black fifteen-year-old boy who enjoyed listening to his friend preach sermon. The young boy would stow away his true passions from his master. During the day he would be listening to other children around his age speak and act like he was working. The essay would later fuse into how people like the young boy would adopt culture trends following a pattern. He explains that we adopt these trends because of others in the world enforce the idea that the popular kid is always the one that everyone has to follow. The process involving the rise of the clothing; where the most popular kid wears the clothing for a couple days, which spurs on into the entire society is following the pattern just because one person decided to wear it. He created an argument of why we follow such absurd patterns. The rhetorical device used was didactic because he used his essay to teach social behaviors and the importance of not conforming to “popular” trends. Mark Twain established the idea that we simply wear popular clothing because everyone else is doing it. He exclaimed that there is no logical reasoning behind why we wear clothes just because everyone else is it is just an instinct.

This essay was a way for Mark Twain to publicize his disappointment with how the world has been running. From some of the other novels he has written, Huckleberry Fin, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and many more resemble the idea to express opinion like he has done in all of his. He, in all of his novels, had the attitude of a free-willed lifestyle with equality for all. Where as in this essay he describes the changes in society that go against his morals and ideas. Throughout his life Mark was always committed to writing, rather being a journalist, an apprentice for a printer company. Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain) is a credible source because of the hard work and the impact he has done to the world of literature.

Fashion at its finest

The Handicapped

The Handicapped

Randolph Bourne’s essay The Handicapped, spoke about the rough experiences people from childhood to adulthood have when they have physical disabilities. “Weakness and low vitality, which makes efforts more difficult and renders him easily fainthearted and discouraged by failure.” Being disabled literally means having a physical or mental condition that limits movement, senses, or activities. In The Handicapped though it is illustrated that having a disability is “uncomfortable” but there are more aspects to life than just a physical limitation. “ The sensitiveness has its both good and bad sides. It makes friendship that most precious thing in the world to him, and he finds that he arrives at a much richer and wider intimacy with his friends than do ordinary men with their light, surface friendships based on good fellowship.”

The rhetorical device, analogy, was displayed throughout the novel, comparing the handicapped man to that of a “normal” one and how he was able to function in similar contexts, making it easier for the audience to fully comprehend. He feels that people are not able to recognize the value of a person because they judge on appearances only. I can relate to this theory, as I grew up with two very close friends both with life-altering disabilities. I could relate to the pain and empathy I felt for them, our friendship was so strong and I have yet to have a stronger friendship and sentimental bond with anyone else. Randolph Bourne was able to bring the pain of being insecure with how you look at such an early non-developed age, but yet we can all still relate to what the message is behind The Handicapped. The somber yet sympathetic tone he used helped the audience feel what it would be like to be in his situation. We can all learn from this that people in the world have deformities but we all need to stick with them and try and understand them, no matter what it takes.
